5 Signs Your Boiler Needs a Service or Repair
22nd September 2026

Your boiler plays an important part in keeping your home warm and providing hot water, but it’s easy to forget about it when everything is working as it should.
Spotting the early signs of a boiler problem can help you get it checked before a small issue develops into a more inconvenient or expensive repair.
Here are five signs that it could be time to call a qualified heating engineer.
1. Your Boiler Is Making Unusual Noises
Boilers aren’t completely silent, but if yours suddenly starts banging, rattling, whistling or making other unusual noises, it’s worth having it investigated.
There can be several causes, from issues with water circulation to components that need attention. Rather than ignoring a new or unusual noise, have the boiler checked by a qualified engineer.
2. Your Radiators Aren’t Heating Properly
Are some of your radiators taking a long time to warm up? Perhaps they’re hot at the top but cold at the bottom, or some rooms simply aren’t getting as warm as they used to.
The problem isn’t necessarily the boiler itself. Your central heating system may have a build-up of sludge or debris which is affecting circulation.
Depending on the cause, your heating system may benefit from maintenance or a power flush to help restore effective circulation.
3. You’re Having Problems With Heating or Hot Water
If your heating keeps cutting out, your hot water isn’t reaching the expected temperature, or your boiler regularly needs resetting, don’t simply put up with it.
Intermittent problems can indicate that something within the boiler or heating system needs attention. Getting the problem diagnosed sooner can potentially prevent a complete breakdown later.
4. Your Boiler Keeps Losing Pressure
Having to regularly top up your boiler pressure isn’t something you should simply accept as normal.
A heating system that repeatedly loses pressure could have an underlying problem, such as a leak or an issue with one of its components.
A heating engineer can investigate the cause and recommend the appropriate repair.
5. It’s Been a While Since Your Last Boiler Service
Even if your boiler appears to be working normally, regular servicing is an important part of looking after it.
An annual boiler service gives a qualified engineer the opportunity to inspect the appliance, check that it’s operating correctly and identify potential problems.
Gas appliances should be serviced and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, with gas work carried out by a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer.
